FAQ

Sandbag questions, answered

Filled sandbags arrive packed with sand and tied, so you can stack them immediately, which matters when water is already rising or a crew is waiting. Empty sandbags cost far less per bag, ship flat and store for years, but you must fill them yourself from a sand pile. Many customers keep a mix: filled bags for the first hour, empty bags for the long haul.

A widely used planning guide is about 600 bags for a wall 30 m (100 ft) long and 30 cm (1 ft) high. Each extra 30 cm of height takes far more bags, because the base must widen too. For a single doorway or garage door, 20 to 60 bags is a common starting point. Send us the length and height you need to protect and we will estimate the quantity.

On Sandbag.ca, empty polypropylene sandbags start from $0.99 per bag, filled sandbags from $5.95 per bag, coloured bags from $6.95 and bulk totes from $460 per tote. Final pricing depends on fill weight, quantity and delivery distance, and all prices are in Canadian dollars before tax. Your written quote shows each part separately.

You can request sandbags for any address in all 10 provinces through Sandbag.ca. Delivery cost and timing depend on the quantity, the fill and how far the address is from available stock, so we confirm both in writing before you pay. Large orders and remote addresses may need extra lead time, especially during spring flood season.

Keep sandbags dry, off bare ground and out of direct sunlight, ideally on a pallet in a garage, shed or warehouse. Sunlight slowly weakens polypropylene, and damp storage rots burlap. Empty bags store almost indefinitely when dry. Filled bags last several years in good storage; check them each spring and replace any with torn fabric before flood season.

Sandbags that have touched floodwater may be contaminated with sewage, fuel or chemicals, so do not empty them into gardens, sandboxes or play areas. Many municipalities publish specific instructions or collection points after a flood. Follow your local guidance, wear gloves, and wash your hands after handling used bags.
